WHERE THE BONG TREE GROWS - Nitro Surfboard Painting

The inspiration for this board came from my South Seas book by James Ramsey Ullman, where he spent a year traveling the remote islands of the South Pacific (in search of the elusive Bong Tree!)

My interpretive Bong Tree originated in the South Pacific, as did 'Ulu (Breadfruit). In fact, very few people know that the Bong Tree and 'Ulu are close cousins. Actually, I think I am the only one who knows this - because I just made that up. The wood of it's trunk can be made into exceptional surfboards. The fruit of the Bong Tree are round with a noticeable smiley face which turns to a frown once the fruit has fallen. Eating a freshly picked Bong Fruit makes one deliriously happy the rest of the day!

Unlike Edward Lear's owl and pussycat sailing along in a pea-green boat stocked with honey, I went with a wild boar and mongoose on a Kon-Tiki style raft provisioned with Kona coffee and coconuts.

BYE-GONE HAWAII

With a play on words, here are a few scenes of old-time Hawaii. I love to picture our islands before the days of highways and high rises.
Tropical carefree Hawaiian bygone days.

MAKES ME HAPPY

Decided to try something other than landscape painting for a while. Came up with this little flower composition. It was really fun to use lots of colorful, thick, juicy paint on the knife to produce the flower petals. Each one has it's own unique features.

To really appreciate all the variable colors in each flower,
here are some close-ups:
