'TIS THE SEASON FOR GRAND MARNIER

Practice, Practice, PRACTICE!
Recently, I was introduced to still life painting by my friend, Sue. She gave me her original “Tangerine Bowl” as inspiration. I wanted to repay her for her generosity by painting her an original palette knife still life of my own. I heard that she likes Grand Marnier, so I went out and bought a bottle of it. I have never tried Grand Marnier before, but it must not be that bad because as I was purchasing it, the cashier was just about drooling and saying “This is some good stuff”. Then, as I was leaving, I heard another person “OOOuuuhhh Grand Marnier, yum yum yum” while smacking their lips together loudly.

Over the next few weeks, I practiced painting the Grand Marnier bottle. It was quite fun, with it’s bright red ribbon, wax stamp front, and reddish glow of it's contents that was cast by the light. On my third try, I was happy with the result. I sent the painting off to Sue, and she loved it.

Now, I may just have to bust open the bottle and see what all the hype is about!

CATCHING SOME 'OHANA TIME IN KIHEI

While on Maui, we came across this picturesque scene as we drove through Kihei one day. A local family enjoying the morning, fishing a stream that runs alongside the St. Theresa Catholic Church. They seemed to be fully enjoying their

FROM HERE TO ETERNITY

A fun morning plein air painting with friends at Halona Cove on Oahu’s south east shore.

Many people refer to this cove as “From Here To Eternity” beach, as it is the location of the famous love scene between Burt Lancester and Deborah Kerr.
I grew up knowing it as “Cockroach Cove”.
What a contrast!

PALETTE KNIFE STILL LIFE

While on Maui a few months ago, I got to visit with Sue Perry, a wonderful palette knife artist, at her studio in Kula. She showed me some of her beautiful still life pieces and was surprised to hear that I had not done still life before.
She gave me “Tangerine Bowl” as inspiration.

I promised I would give it a try when I got back home.

Here are a few of my first palette knife still life’s. They are actually quite fun to do!
