DECEMBER WIND & RAIN

The weather here the past few weeks has not been great. Extremely windy conditions and rain showers do not make for very fun plein air painting, which leaves me in the studio instead. Here are a few of my latest plein air days, when the weather in Paradise was still picture perfect. Hoping for clear sunny skies and calmer tradewinds soon, I am more than ready to get back out there!

Windy Day Kawaikui

It was a blustery day at Kawaikui Beach Park and I spent much time staking down my Soltek and trying to keep my canvas from becoming a kite, but it was still beautiful, and worth the struggle with the wind to be painting outdoors in Paradise!

LANIKAI FULL MOON - Night Time Plein Air

I recently got to do something new and exciting, plein air painting at night! A friend informed us that a full moon would be rising up over the Mokulua Islands of Lanikai that evening and we didn’t want to miss a chance to try and capture it on canvas.
Putting in the basic compositions while waiting for the moon to rise.

When that big orange full moon popped up over the horizon, it was just as spectacular as the voggy morning sunrises we witness once in awhile out surfing. We all got to work using headlamps to provide just enough light to be able to see the canvas and palette. I have never painted a nocturne scene, and it was quite different from plein airing in the daytime, but it sure was a lot of fun.
Painting by headlamp!

The Mokulua Islands were silhouetted against the sky and the moon cast an orange glow on the water and lit the surrounding clouds. It was SO BEAUTIFUL. Unfortunately, the camera could not capture it.

Here is the result of my first night time plein air painting.

Lanikai Full Moon
9x12
SOLD

When everyone was finished, we let out a great big howl at the moon! Nothing makes plein air painting more fun than being with a great group of friends to share the experience. We are already waiting for the next Lanikai full moon!
Mark lights up his masterpiece at the end of the night. Spencer provided us with some great Ukulele tunes throughout the evening. He is an awesome Uke player!
L to R: Mark Brown, Lisabongzee, Susie Anderson, Ron Grimes, Guy Ballou (our expert moon informant).
Front Row: Spencer Chang and Barbara Sumida.
