MALUAKA MORNING

Maluaka Beach, on Maui’s south shore, is very scenic. In the winter months you can see humpback whales breaching everywhere. And in the early mornings, as the sun pops up over Pu’u Ola’i (Red Hill), the sand on the beach begins to glow. A perfect way to start your day in Paradise!

TOSHI TEACHES PATIENCE

In July of 2017, I received a beautiful orchid plant from a special family on the Big Island of Hawaii. The orchid was shipped from Akatsuka Orchid Garden Volcano, HI here to Oahu. While unpacking it, I was a bit apprehensive, as I had never kept orchids before. Although I do have quite the green thumb with outdoor plants, indoor plants don't usually do well for me. There is a wonderful garden window in my kitchen, but in the past 23 years the only plants I have been able to keep alive there were air plants and cactus.

I slowly adapted the specialty cattleya "Toshi's Pizzaz", as she is so named, to the garden window. After a few months, I rehomed her to a larger orchid pot. So far, so good, she was still green and beautiful. A few months later, a new leaf - ever so slowly - emerged, and after another few months, another new leaf.....but still no blooms. Finally, a third leaf emerged. As the saying goes "third time's a charm".

Exactly 15 months from the day I received it, Toshi's "charm" appeared as a big, beautiful, bright bloom! I was so happy. The fact that Toshi was still going strong after 457 days in the garden window was rewarding enough, but now to have something spectacular to show for it was quite a treat!

It has now been almost a week since she bloomed, and Toshi's "Pizzaz" is still showing well. I welcome every morning that I open the blinds, and there that blossom is, still as big and as beautiful as the first day. I know that the bloom will not last forever, but having to wait 15 months taught me to appreciate it all the more!

"Toshi's Pizzaz"
The deep, rich coloring reminds me of a spectacular tropical sunset.

At home in the garden window along with my Tiki H(AIR) plants and Grandma's cactus.

THE LEGEND OF THE LIZARD

The true name of Chinaman's Hat is Mokoli'i. It is said to come from an ancient Hawaiian Legend. Here is the condensed version:
The Goddess Hi'iaka was traveling along the windward coast when she came upon the dragon lizard, Mokoli'i. Hi'iaka slayed the giant lizard, cut off it's tail and threw it in the ocean near Kualoa. The small islet is said to be the tip of the tail of poor Mokoli'i.

Lizard tail or Chinaman's Hat, either way, it is a beautiful little offshore islet.

A BOX OF FORGOTTEN COLORS

I recently came across a box stored away, filled with tubes of paint. These are colors that I do not use in my daily landscapes, so I decided to try them out in an abstract painting.

Little did I realize just how much paint goes into a palette knife abstract, if you really want it to have great thick texture. Luckily, since these were not my everyday paints, I had no problem using them excessively.
But let me tell you something......Phthalo Blue Green has a dark side!

In my opinion, Phthalo Blue Green is the Kool-Aid, the grape juice, the blueberry, the red wine of paint colors. I am normally a pretty clean painter, but after just a few minutes with Phthalo, I was finding little deep blue, hard to remove, spots everywhere - on my hands, my face, my clothes, countertops, door knobs, even the refrigerator was not safe! It quickly reminded me why I do not use this color in my day to day painting, although it IS truly beautiful (when you are able to get some of it onto the canvas).

The abstract is going well so far. Maybe by the time it is pau, Phthalo Blue Green and I will have learned to play nicely together!

BITTERSWEET

Today, I sold one of my all time favorite paintings.
It is headed off across the USA to the east coast - Florida, to be exact. I was a bit sad to pack it up and say good-bye, but if it can make it's new owners in the Sunshine State as happy as it has made me, then all is good!

KAMAOLE KIAWE

This large kiawe tree can be found at the end of Kamaole I beach park right before the trail leads up to the Royal Mauian.
Many people walk right past without taking much notice, but this tree really is beautiful with it's craggy branches reaching out towards the sea, and it's rough jagged textured trunk catching the light in many ways.

SNOW DAY IN HAWAII

Dean felt bad that I was working so hard to defrost the freezer all by myself, so he came over to help. That's when he spotted Little Miss Raisineyed Rosemary in the sink. Needless to say, I got no help with the freezer.

A DAY AT MAKENA LANDING

Makena Landing, on Maui's south side, is a great place to kayak and snorkel. This is a view looking towards the north. Although it is not one of Maui's best beaches for sunbathing, the shade of the kiawe trees offers a nice place to chill with friends and family, while enjoying many ocean activities -- just don't step on the thorns!
