MAKAPU'U PLEIN AIR BREAKFAST

It was a beautiful morning, so we quickly packed up my plein air gear and headed for Makapu'u just as the sun popped up over the horizon.

When the weather is this nice, I don't really notice that I didn't take time to eat breakfast.

But as the painting moves along, my tummy starts telling me it's hungry.

The assistant is patiently waiting for a tasty snack too.

Almost pau.

Luckily, hubby always comes prepared and whipped us up some biscuits and gravy and freshly ground "Ka Pono O Ka Aina" Big Island coffee !

I could get used to this!

KUAPA POND PLEIN AIR

At the entrance to Hawaii Kai, you will find a bridge crossing Kuapa Pond. The small island to the right of this photo is known as "Duck Island" and is home to many of the marina's cute little waterfowl. The tide here goes out to Maunalua Bay. Although this colorful tiny island is known as "Duck Island", on this particular day, there were no ducks to be seen while I was painting. There were, however, quite a few Cattle Egret, searching the freshly cut grass for a tasty snack!

This is actually the same location as one of my first plein air sessions back in January of 2012. It is hard to believe that 7 years have passed since I last painted here. This scene still holds a special place in my early plein-airing memories. Below are some pictures from that day. It was the very first time I got to try my newly purchased SolTek easel. I was still brush painting at the time, still learning the ropes of plein airing, but enjoying every moment. Brighton had fun watching the ducks!

A PAW-SITIVE ATTITUDE

My little Superhero and the lesson he is teaching me.

I wish I could say that Brighton's new Rex Specs are just for looks, but that is not the case (although he does look pretty dang cute in them).

Bry is now 15 years old, and is dealing with degenerative iris atrophy, where his muscle can no longer constrict his pupil to protect from letting too much light in. He must now wear these goggles in any type of bright light.

Fortunately, he seems to love them and I have no trouble
getting him to wear them.

In the past two years, he has had quite a few age-related challenges, and has not only accepted and adapted to them, but ALWAYS does it with a positive attitude! He never gets down or depressed at what he can no longer do, he just deals with it in his own decisive way.

He amazes us every single day with this decided approach to life, something that I am trying to learn by his example.

This boy has taught me so much in our years together. He is the littlest, BIGGEST LOVE OF MY LIFE, my hero, my SUPERBRY!
