Tonight is Opening Night of the Punahou Carnival's Art Gallery.
This year, I was invited to participate in this very popular attraction of the Carnival. It is a great venue for Hawaii artist’s to show their work, and a wonderful way to help the school raise money for scholarship funds. A friend of mine told me
“It’s the Superbowl of Artist Showing”.
The show’s public opening is tonight from 4:30 – 8 p.m. and will also run through the duration of the Carnival, which is two days only – Friday and Saturday, February 1st & 2nd, from 11 a.m. till 11 p.m.
You don’t want to miss this one! Of all the shows I have participated in, this one outranks them all as far as quality original artwork by some of Hawaii’s top artists. I am so excited to be a part of this event!
Here are some of my originals that will be available at the gallery.

On a trip to Kauai, I met up with my good friends and fellow artists, Marionette & Dava. Marionette has her own studio, Painting Paradise, on Kauai’s southwest side, in the town of Waimea. We were planning to go to lunch, but had some time, so she decided to show us her new fascination….. encaustics.
I had never even heard of encaustics before, but she said “basically it’s painting with hot wax”. How exciting!
We all got to work, experimenting, melting colored wax with a special iron and a stylus
(kind of like a hot wax writing pen for finer detail).
Since we were new to this, our scenes were pretty basic.
Hibiscus flowers proved to be very fun to create.
And with the assortment of beautiful colors, abstracts turned out quite nice! What a great afternoon it was.
It has now been over a year since our encaustic painting party, and sad to say, I have not given encaustics much thought, but Marionette sure has. She has the “art of hot wax melting” down, and it is such a thrill to see what new encaustic creations she comes up with.
My favorites are her Hawaiian Hula Dancers.
The “flow” of the entire painting is loose, free and liquid feeling.
I still have no idea how she is able to get her beautiful Hula Dancers to come to life as they do.
She has also given Kauai landscapes an encaustic shot, with much success.
And one of my favorites is a beautiful card she hand-made for me of sparkling gold bamboo.
Since trying encaustics first hand, I can appreciate her work even more, and I am grateful to her for giving Dava and I a fun encaustic experience!
You can find an assortment of her original encaustics in her
ETSY SHOP.
If you would like to learn the art of encaustics, watercolors, acrylic, pastels, silk painting, and more, Marionette offers these classes at her Painting Paradise studio, and she is a great teacher!
Mahalo, Marionette!

After painting so many mini’s
it felt a bit strange working on a larger canvas again!

Some mornings, you will find Kane’ohe Bay quite magical. With sunny, clear skies, and quiet, calm waters, the colorful little boats bob about lazily. Not an ounce of breeze to disturb the tropical palms. Add in the beautiful Koolau mountain range, and Chinaman’s Hat in the distance, and you easily get the feeling of another perfect day in Hawai’i Nei.
"Another Perfect K~Bay Day" is a 20 x 16 palette knife painting.

Today is one of the most beautiful days!
Calm, clear skies, warm sun but a nice coolness to the air. Such a contrast from the windy, wet weather we had been having. My sweet little Papayabirds are everywhere, singing away, figuring out which palm tree to build their nest in. The recent rains have already worked their magic, making our mountains lush and green once again.
You can’t get any more perfect than this. I am outta here… gonna go enjoy every bit of this day in Paradise!

What a great way to end 2012!
Last November was my first try at a nocturne painting. We had such a fun time that we decided to give it another go on December 28th, the last full moon of 2012.
We met at Lanikai Beach again and quite a few more painters showed up this time.
The weather turned out to be unbelievably perfect, which was a bit strange, as most of the week had been very windy and rainy.
There were many more beachgoers this time, waiting for the full moon show, which gave it a party-like atmosphere.
We all got to work as it got darker and darker.
And then it appeared!
It wasn't quite as spectacular as the previous time because of some low-lying clouds that blocked it's view as it inched above the horizon. But once it cleared those, the bright orange ball began to glow and received many cheers and applause from the beachgoers.
What a great way to end the year!
Here is my finished painting. I placed the moon between the Mokulua Islands just to make it a bit different from last months painting. As artists, we are allowed to move moons if we like!
I was surprised when I got the painting home and compared it with my first one, how similar they both were in color. I guess that really is how I see it.

The whipping winds and sudden rain squalls this past week do not want to subside. With gusts up to 50 mph, the palm trees outside are really doing the hula!
