Here are a few more Plantation Houses I painted while on Lana'i.
This one challenged me because, not only was I not used to painting Plantation Houses with palette knife, but this composition of just a corner of a house filling the entire scene was something I had never done before.

ALOHA FROM LANA'I!
Lisabongzee's Island Dream Life Website
We have been on Lana'i for a little over three weeks now.
I have enjoyed seeing the island, meeting the friendly locals, and painting many of the wonderful sights of this beautiful Island. Some people would not last three days on Lana'i, much less three weeks. There is no night life, and not much shopping, bars or restaurants. But if you are the type of person that doesn't need all of that, I am pretty sure you will love Lana'i.
It is one of the most peaceful places I have ever known. There are no dogs barking or sirens wailing throughout the night. No traffic noise because there is no traffic! There is only one gas station on the entire island, two markets, and a handful of small eateries (aside from the two high end resorts at Koele and Manele).
At night, you can see a billion stars in the sky, and the quietness is unbelievable. There are no traffic lights, the speed limit in town is 20 MPH, and yes, people do still wave and say "Aloha" even if they do not know you.
It is a different place and a different way of life, and I hope it doesn't change any time soon!
Here are just some of the wonderful things about Lana'i that I will miss.
Colorful island scenery.
Beautiful deserted beaches.
Friendly locals.
Cool misty mornings.
Gorgeous sunrises.
Colorful rooftops.
Cook Pines leading the way.
Lana'i Ohana Poke Market.
Hanalei Poi to go with the poke.
(Best poi ever!)
Lanai's beautiful community pool
(to work off all that poi and poke!)
And long evening golf course walks with Brighton
and his Lana'i buddy, Leilei.
And here are a few things I won't miss as much.
Staining red dirt that covers everything.
Milk $8.29 a gallon.
Gasoline $5.79 a gallon.
I guess it's a small price to pay for living in such a unique place!

ALOHA FROM LANA'I!

I have been painting on the island of Lana'i for the past two weeks and having a wonderful time!
Lana'i City is filled with the colorful and characteristic little Plantation Style houses that I love so much, and driving up and down the streets with row after row of them, it does feel like you have stepped back in time. Even though I am so inspired by them, I rarely paint them because with a palette knife it is not the easiest thing to do. But I was determined on this trip to make them my main painting subjects, so I got to work. The first few paintings were quite frustrating. A friend of mine once said "Painting with a palette knife is like trying to paint with a brick." That pretty much summed up how I felt too, and was ready to throw that brick right out the window! But I kept going, and by about my 5th Plantation House painting, things started to click. I still have a bit more time here, and hopefully I have turned that brick into something that will let me paint what I really love.....My "Dream Hale's" !
