This is a painting of Papailoa Beach, on Oahu's North Shore, that I recently finished. The family for whom this painting was done actually lived on
Papailoa Road during their childhood.
Can't imagine a much nicer backyard than this!

Papailoa Beach
11x14 Palette Knife Painting
Last year, friends of mine took me to plein air at Papailoa Beach.
It was the first time I had been there and the day was absolutely perfect!
The scenery was amazing, and what really made it special were the many large honu (turtles) that hung around in the shallow waters the entire time we painted. They lazily munched on their "Limu Salad From The Sea". Limu is the algae that grow on the rocks here. It provides the honu with a tasty snack, and the artist with some fabulous colors to paint!

FINALLY!
After TWO MONTHS of "no surf rib rehab", I got to start the morning with a beautiful sunrise and a fun surf.
I can't even begin to tell you how awesome it feels to be out there again.

Although I am happy that it is almost the weekend, I am not so happy that it is now week #9 and I am STILL out of surfing commission.
At least Bry & I got to witness another beautiful Sandy's sunrise.
Not the best way to start my mornings, but I can't complain.
These ribs of mine are really trying my patience, but PT is going well.
Most of my physical therapy includes swimming and paddling my board in a pool.
There is no way I could swim without this.
MY SWIMMAN!
Being able to hear my tunes underwater is SO COOL! I have had my swimman for about 7 years now. Dean got it for me when I screwed up (literally) my knee snowboarding and had to do water PT to get walking again.
SWIMMAN - one of the greatest inventions EVER!
HAPPY ALOHA FRIDAY!

Thankful that Hurricane Ana decided to give us nothing more than a soggy, dark, wet weekend. Spent the time coming up with many new painting sketches -- both big and small.
These should keep me busy for a while!

Week #7 and still just a spectator.
Sigh........
But the palette knife has kept me busy.
Just finished up another large painting that turned out to be one of my favorites so far.
I am usually not one for commission work, however, when a couple from Arizona asked me to paint a large Pa'ako Beach for them, I could not turn it down! As you probably know by now, Pa'ako is one of my favorite Maui beaches to paint.
Pa'ako Beach 18x36

Sides painted too.
Here is the wonderful response I got when the couple received their painting:
It came today!!!!! I can't even begin to tell you how much we love it!!!! It's gorgeous and the coloring and stroke marks are so perfect! I'm so very excited about this!
Thank you so much!
Surfing will still have to wait a bit longer, but when I am able to create pieces like this in the meantime, life is pretty dang good - sore ribs and all!

It is now October and the entire month of September passed by without a single surf day. I have been told that ribs take a long time to heal, and now I know from personal experience just how true this is. I only hope I can be back in the water before October passes by too.
Below is a short video of the actual ride that smashed my ribs. It wasn't the wave that did the damage, it was the "flying off and hitting the water behind at a high rate of speed" part. Something I have done many times before with no problems whatsoever, but this time was different.
It felt like I slammed into a solid concrete sidewalk.

On the brighter side, I was able to paint quite a lot this month.
